Hip Measurements

In addition to the 12 measurements listed below, this image can be used to measure hip laxity using Norberg Angles.

1.    pelvic inlet--distance connecting the top points of the socket in the hip joint
2.    pelvic outlet--widest distance across the pelvis at the inferior or caudal end
3.    right ischial tuberosity (r. ischial tub.)--length of this (right) boney landmark where a number of muscles attach
4.    left ischial tuberosity (l. ischial tub.)--same measurement taken on the left side
5.    hip width--distance connecting the tops of the iliac crests or hip bones
6.    sacrum--diameter of the sacrum at superior or cranial end
7.    right os coxa (r. os coxa)--length of the os coxa bone from the left iliac crest or hip to the right ischial tuberosity
8.    left os coxa (l. os coxa)--same measurement taken on the left side
9.    right trochanter (r. trochanter)--distance from the center of the femur head to the bump or trochanter on the right side
10.  left trochanter (l. trochanter)--same measurement taken on the left side
